Text Box: The Center for Education and Performing Arts
Pell City, Alabama

The CEPA is a $7M performing arts center with 53,274 square feet located in Pell City, Alabama. This project represents a unique partnership between the City of Pell City and the local school system, with additional financial support from the St. Clair County Commission. For many years, the community had envisioned a performing arts venue, but it did not become a reality until a synergistic relationship, partially brokered by the architect, was developed to build this multi-purpose facility. Our staff worked in close collaboration with the Mayors and City Councils of two administrations, the Superintendent, School Board, and County Commission to develop a facility that incorporated all these constituencies’ needs, met each entity’s budget and funding requirements. This resulted in a hallmark building and very real symbol of the best of inter-governmental collaboration. Our staff was also involved in a private fundraising effort which raised an additional $736,000 for enhancements and upgrades to the facility. The community is extremely proud of this project and the positive impact it has made.

The project includes a Gallery Commons and Reception space; a 400-seat Community Theater with state-of-the-art lighting, rigging, and sound capabilities; Dressing Rooms; a Box Office; a 2,000-seat Gymnasium with its own stage; four Locker Rooms; Concessions Stands; and other support spaces.

Four members of the Aho Architects staff played key roles on this project, including lead design and overall project management, while working for McCauley Associates before forming our own firm.
